The 2017-2018 Listeriosis outbreak, killing more than 180 South Africans and shaking an entire industry will not be soon forgotten. The source of the outbreak strain, known as ST6, was finally discovered to originate from an Enterprise Foods production facility in Polokwane. Almost all Enterprise products were pulled nationwide, and the Polokwane factory was immediately closed. A second factory in Germiston, as well as a Rainbow Chicken Wolwehoek production facility, was also found to contain listeria monocytogenes. As a result, a total amount of 5 812 tons of ready-to-eat processed meat was recalled nationwide, with the total cost of containing the outbreak amounting to R12m. It is not surprising that consumers remain distrusting of certain producers and products and most probably will be for some time to come.
