“A black woman’s hair is a reflection of her soul. It’s dense, it’s kinky, it’s soft, it’s textured, it’s difficult, it’s easy and it’s fun. That’s why we love our hair” Tracee Ellis Ross.
I have always had a love/hate relationship with hair… or rather the importance that hair has in our society. As black women, we grow up being taught that our hair is our crowning glory. That’s never quite resonated with me, mostly because of the time, money, pain and upkeep involved to keep our crowns gleaming. For the most part, I fall into the category of “somewhat combed”, as evidenced by my primary school photo.
As I’ve gotten older, however, my hair journey has been varied and experimental. Black women have been bestowed with the gift of beautiful and versatile hair and I wanted to explore that. I’ve been from short to long, platinum to muted, textured to sleek. Different parts of your hair journey bring out equally different parts of your personality. It also changes the way that people perceive you and treat you…
Right now I’ve gone for another big chop- probably where I’m happiest which bald-adjacent. Oh how the world would be so much less complicated if we were all bald! It’s freeing and opens up the door to a new story. Let’s see where this ends up.
