After a 23 year love/hate relationship with my hair, which included everything from colouring to cutting to straightening treatments, I decided to start embracing my natural hair. Six months into this new journey after many tears and endless frustrations with the different textures, lengths and density, my hair had as a transitioning naturalistia. For those who don’t know transitioning – this is when you gradually cut the processed/damaged hair until you are a 100% natural and this can take 1-4 years, depending on the length of your hair as well as how much damaged/processed hair you have. As well as, how much you trim/cut at each interval, which is usually every 4-6 weeks. I decided to do the big chop and cut off all damaged/processed hair which was about 60-70% of my hair length at the time.

I can still remember the day I decided to cut my hair perfectly. It was the 20th of November 2020 at 10am and moments before, my hairstylist made the first cut I closed my eyes and told her to tell me when it was done. I was nervous and scared to have my hair at a length where it could not be tied or hide my face as this required a new level of confidence I wasn’t sure I had. However, here we are nearly 10 months later with a full and healthy head of 3c and 4a curls, which I love and embrace fully because it is a part of me and who I am as a mixed raced South African.
